FAQ

Q: "What is a survey, and what do I get for my money?"

A: Basically a survey is a full visual inspection of the vessel and its components. What this includes is hull and deck structure, with checks for core and de- lamination problems. A full systems check is done to see if all the systems are functioning properly and are properly installed. I focus on safety issues and those things that could cause problems down the road. I try to locate hidden defects that most buyers wound miss. You will receive a final report that is accepted by finance and insurance companies. I do not spend a lot of time on cosmetic issues.

Q: How much will it cost?

A: I would love to give a simple answer here but the fact is boats come in many sizes and types. Some Surveyors charge only by the hour, others only by the foot. I like to discuses the client's needs balanced with the age and type of vessel to give the best value. Before you hire a surveyor talk to them and see if you feel comfortable with their experience and abilities. Remember you get what you pay for; this is not a time to hire someone based on cost alone.

Q: My broker gave me a list of surveyors but you're not on it.

A: Brokers want to sell boats as quickly as possible and move on to the next sale. Any good surveyor will find problems, slowing down or ending a sale. It is in the broker's interest to recommend a surveyor that will find as few problems as possible. I am proud of the fact that not many brokers recommend me, it means I am doing my job well and protecting the buyer, not the seller.

Q: Will you do an engine compression test?

A: No. I leave this to mechanics to do. They are far more familiar with the types of engines and common problems associated with specific engines, and makes. My time is spent on rest of the boat. If the engine is a big concern, have a mechanical survey done first, if all checks out OK then have a complete survey done. If you need I can recommend area mechanics I work with and that I feel will do a good job.

Q: I am thinking of buying a boat from EBay, can you take quick look and see if it is worth bidding on?

A: Yes, but do not wait till the last day of bidding to contact me. Find out the boats true location and give me a call, I will be glad to help you on an hourly rate, and I except Paypal. If you purchase the boat and need a full survey I will give a discount for some of the time spent.

Q: Will I need to have the boat hauled for bottom inspection and who pays for this?

A: The answer here is almost always yes. Unless you can talk the seller into paying, it is the buyer's responsibility. Generally the seller will recommend a yard to do this.

Q: Do I need to be present at the time of survey?

A: I like for my clients to be present but it is not required. Scheduling and distance sometimes make this difficult. In most cases I do like to meet on the boat at some time to discuss the findings. I also strongly recommend you personally take a sea trial.
